An office fit out really can have a significant impact on the fortunes of your business. Refurbishing your space can have a tremendous effect on the happiness of your employees, allowing them to work more efficiently and collaboratively – and it can also help you attract the right talent.
But office fit out projects can be a whole lot more complex than applying a fresh lick of paint. A lot of thought needs to go into each and every aspect of your new office in order to completely justify the effort of refurbishing it. That begs the question: just how long can you expect your fit out project to take?
Office fit out timescales
There’s no straightforward answer to this question, as you might imagine. The timescale of an office fit out project can vary significantly depending on your requirements; simpler, single-room renovations will take much less time than more ambitious refurbishment projects.
The first thing to consider is that each fit out project comprises multiple stages. First up is the consultation phase, which is all about establishing the goals and direction of the project. Depending on the complexity of what you have in mind, this phase is likely to take a month or two to complete. It may take less time, it may take more – these timeframes don’t apply to every project.
The office space planning and interior design phase is where the project really begins to take shape. Drafting initial plans, converting these into digital designs and making revisions can take three months or more. Sometimes, the design phase can run on for much longer than that, especially if your plans or preferences shift during the design phase.
Once the design is finalised, there’s one more hurdle to get over: licences and approvals. You’ll need approval from your landlord and potentially the local council before you can begin work, potentially delaying things by another month or two.
The actual fit out process, however, is where timescales vary the most. If significant work is required to restructure or modify the building itself, you could be looking at four or five months before the space is ready to use. If only minor changes are required, the fit out process could be completed within a matter of weeks.
