Why Your Reception Area Matters

Most of us know just how important it is to plan an office space carefully. Executed correctly, offices can seriously boost employee wellbeing and operational efficiency – two factors that may just be crucial to the success of your business. But what about your reception or meet and greet area?

It can be easy to overlook (as most of us spend comparatively little time there), but the design of your reception area will help would-be clients, potential employees and stakeholders form their first impressions of your company. Those first impressions really matter, and it can take just seconds for them to be created. Give your visitors a good first impression and it’ll stay with them – but so will a negative one.

Getting it right

Keen to create that positive first impression? Of course you are. But how do you go about doing that?

It’s certainly not as simple as you might think. You’ll have to consider the likes of:

  • Colour
  • Airiness and spaciousness
  • Lighting
  • Furniture
  • Information about your company

Not every business is lucky enough to have a large, glass-walled reception area. The smaller your space, the more creative you’ll need to be with your furniture choices. Less is often more, and there are a whole host of clever solutions on the market to help you make the most of your available space.

The reception area is also a great place to inform visitors about your business, its ethos and history. Even if they’ve never been on your website, visitors should be able to get a good feel for what you’re all about by setting foot inside your reception area.

Your reception area doesn’t have to be awash with branding and bright colours – you don’t want to bombard visitors. And don’t think you have to paint every surface in your company colours: a subtler approach is often the way forward.

You want your visitors to feel comfortable and at ease, so providing them with comfortable, soft seating should go down well. If they’ve arrived early for a meeting, they may have to spend a decent chunk of time sitting in your reception area – so it’s worth thinking ahead and providing a table for them to put their laptop and coffee cup on while you’re at it.

With all of this to consider (and plenty more besides), planning and designing a reception area is no easy task. That’s where the experts come in…
